India’s Services Sector Faces 4½-Year Slowdown in July as Demand Softens

India’s services sector activity hit a 53-month low in July amid softer domestic and international demand. Manufacturing lost steam too, despite modest hiring gains and cautious optimism.

July Sees Services Sector Slugging It Out

The latest monthly Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) data revealed that India’s services sector expanded at its slowest pace in over four years during July. With a reading dipping near 53, firms grappled with softer demand both at home and abroad, resulting in muted sports action across the industry. This 53-month low highlights the challenges services providers face as they navigate a period of subdued client enquiries and project rollouts.

New Orders Lose Momentum on Domestic and International Fronts

July’s data showed a notable moderation in new business inflows, as domestic buyers exercised caution and international markets hesitated to place fresh orders. The pullback in enquiries mirrored a broader trend of tightening corporate budgets and delayed spending plans. For companies relying on a steady pipeline of contracts, this translated into lower match excitement compared to earlier months. While many service firms have diversified their offerings, the current trend underscores the need to reignite demand through targeted outreach and value-added solutions.

Manufacturing Also Plays on the Defensive

The slowdown in services was accompanied by a deceleration in manufacturing output, contributing to a dip in the composite PMI. Factory activity saw a smaller uptick in new work, as producers wrestled with fluctuating raw material costs and inventory adjustments. Though still in expansion territory, the pace of production growth softened, reflecting a cautious approach by manufacturers. The combined performance of both sectors suggests that India’s post-pandemic recovery is entering a testing phase, where maintaining momentum will require strategic interventions and fresh growth drivers.

Hiring Rebound and Easing Cost Pressures

Despite the overall slowdown, firms recorded a modest rebound in staffing levels during July. Many companies reported that workforce numbers edged higher, driven by the need to fulfill existing orders and support upcoming projects. At the same time, input cost inflation showed signs of easing, as commodity prices cooled and supply chains stabilized. This dual trend of modest hiring gains and manageable cost pressures provided some relief, enabling businesses to balance their budgets and prepare for a possible resurgence in demand later in the year.

Firms Maintain Optimism Amid Slowdown

Even with growth at a multi-year low, service providers retained a positive outlook for the year ahead. Most respondents to the PMI survey expressed confidence that market conditions would improve, citing expectations of renewed client spending and policy support from the government. This cautious optimism reflects a belief that India’s economic fundamentals remain strong and that the current lull is temporary. Companies are strategizing to leverage digital solutions, strengthen client relationships and explore new sectors, aiming to capture growth once the match excitement returns.
